The city of Varanasi has been a center and the melting pot of culture and tradition from ages. The ethnic artifacts, traditional handicrafts and other articles somehow manage to exhibit the cultural and traditional heritage of the ancient city, preserving and passing it down through successive generations. Today shopping in Varanasi is a delightful experience, as its busy markets had shops offers the best of embroideries, souvenirs and other items not to be missed.
Amongst the most famous buys, silk weaving is regarded as cities specialty and it is claimed that nowhere in the world is found such fine embroidery. Brassware, gold jewelry, ivory ware, wall hangings, woodcraft, carpets, lampshades are also highly popular.
Varanasi was also the city that saw musical legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan livening up its air by their charming music. This has also resulted in the popularity of various skillfully designed musical instruments like Sitars, Tabla, Pakhawaj and Shehnai that are now famous throughout the world.
A special mention must be made about the Banarasi Saree that serves as cities very own claim to fame. Famous throughout the country as an Indian woman's coveted possession, Banarasi Saree has been an important part of the Indian bride wardrobe for a long time. Exhibiting the masterful skills and genius of the traditional weaver, the Banarasi saris reached their peak during the Mughal era that saw the amalgamation of Indian designs and Persian motifs.
The Banarasi sari comes mainly in four different varieties namely, the pure silk (katan), georgette, organza (kora) with zari and silk and shattir. An ideal Banarasi Sari comprises of around 5600 thread wires with 45-inch width and takes around 15 days to complete. The city dominates the silk weaving arena in the world. Now a part and parcel of most ceremonies in the city, Banaras Brocades has no competition whatsoever in the world market.

Bharat Mata Temple is like any of its counterparts located near and far- the glorious and historical temples depicting wonderful carvings and architecture, and visited by numerous people throughout the year. However, there is one chief characteristic that sets it apart from other shrines and temples- there is not a single idol or deity inside the complex. Instead, the temple houses a map of ‘Pre-independence era’ India carved out of marble and famous as the perfect exhibition of scales both longitude as well as latitude wise.
Bharat Mata Temple as the name suggest is dedicated to Mother India, the human manifestation of Indian nation. The complex was borne out as a result of a vision by India’s two nationalist- Babu Shiv Prasad and Shri Durga Prasad Khatri who was also a reputed numismatist and antiquarian. They were amused to see that the cultural city of Varanasi had temples & shrines belonging to several religions and faiths, but none that exemplified the unity in diversity that India possessed- and the Bharat Mata temple was built in 1936 to address the same issue.
Located inside the Kashi Vidyapeeth Campus, the structural design of the temple comprises of 5 pillars which converge into one at the top. The 5 pillars stand for the 5 basic elements of creation namely earth, wind, fire, water and sky, whereas their convergence at the top implies that ultimately these elements merge with the Supreme (The Brahma). And as a fitting tribute to the values for which it stands for, the temple was inaugurated by none other than Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation.
The map placed inside was built from marble bought from Makrana and is a three dimensional figure with just the right proportions depicting oceans, lands and hills. As the temple was constructed prior to India’s independence, the map comprises of undivided India. The plains, oceans and mountains are all carved with a lot of precision with attention being given to even minor details. Today, the Bharat mata temple is venerated by all Indians irrespective of their caste, creed or religion.
The folklore of Lord Rama’s reunion with his brother Bharat after the latter spend 14 years in exile is etched in Hindu culture and tradition in a big way, and the festival of Bharat Milap is celebrated to commemorate the same event. The festival is held the day following Dussehra at Nati Imli, Varanasi which along with Dussehra festival comprises one of Varanasi cities greatest attractions.
Celebrated with great fanfare and devotion, the festival witnesses thousands of devotees gather in the streets to see the procession of Lord Ram and his reunion with Bharat. As a mark of respect, they put ‘Tilak’ on forehead and garland on Lord Ram and his brothers.
